Better Than Jail

So tonight I have a privilege I've never had before and boy am I excited! I get to attend traffic school! I've never been before so in a twisted way I am anticipating the curriculum I've heard others speak of with fondness. The bright spot is that I have to go downtown because I was in Salt Lake proper when I received my special citation and that means school is only one hour. If you attend in the suburbs you're it for the entire night--three hours. So, I consider myself fortunate that I am a selective speeder.

The rub is that I hardly ever speed. Since I've had kids, I've slowed way down. The last ticket I had was in Virginia on the morning of the day I packed up my things to drive west. In fact, usually I am slow which I can tell irritates people but I don't care. I have wee ones on board. In fact, a few weeks ago, Corbin and I were in separate cars and he pulled off the road to ask me why I was going so slow.

But alas, I was busted while on a test drive in a minivan, of all things. Yes, that is a true story. My coworker and I took a van for a test drive over lunch a few weeks ago and we were turning around in the airport. A word of caution--they are VERY particular there. Do not speed. You will have to attend traffic school, although it will be for only one hour. When the policeman pulled me over he asked where the license plate on the back was. I told him I was test driving the van to which I could see the "yeah, right lady" look spread across his face. "How long have you been 'test driving?'" was his next inquiry. "Oh, about 5 minutes." (Come on, do you really think a pregnant 40 year old with her boss is out lifting a van?) With that he took my license and was gone. He didn't ticket me for the plates but I did get the speeding citation. I've never been good at the pouty, whiny, please don't give me the ticket approach so I took it like a man (so to speak).

When we returned it to the dealer he asked how it was to which I replied "fast." So here's to hoping that traffic school is also fast.

Bacon Heaven

Today we're out of milk, fruit cups, and a few other staples. I didn't get to the grocery store over the weekend. It's a bummer to run out but makes us appreciate when we have our provisions on hand.

As such, providing lunches for the gang becomes a challenge. I scrapped together some lunch for the kids but didn't bother with Corbin or I. Actually, that is a lie--I brought a pack of microwavable mac-n-cheese but I didn't have the heart to eat it. Some days I do but not today.

That left me in the perfect pickle. I HAD to buy lunch at Maxi's Deli. Today the special was barbeque bacon burger and fries with fry sauce. Normally I eat healthy all the time and I went kicking and screaming. You can decide how badly I lie. Let me just say--UMMMMM. There are some things in life that are just worth it and the baby wrote me a "thank you" for such an awesome lunch. I like pleasing my kids.

Calls and calls

The last few days it seems like I've made alot of phone calls. Some weeks are like that. I really don't like to talk on the phone that much--especially for stuff I have to deal with that I'd rather ignore.

Case in point--taxes. It's only the 15th and the accountant may or may not get our taxes filed on time. Car registration--we finally broke down and bought a minivan so I can stop thinking about it. But I really can't stop thinking about it until I finish up the paperwork which = more calls. Calls to cancel this, start that, follow up on this, etc. It's just been a busy calling week. Maybe I should glue the phone to my head. Oh well, this too shall pass and something worse will take it's place.

We're gearing up for a trip to PA on April 30. Hopefully I'll get all my calls completed and issue resolved by then. Corbin will be staying behind because he can't stand the thought of leaving the minivan alone. Well that's a lie--he doesn't have enough vacation at work yet but I think he is secretly looking forward to 10 days of solitude. I have informed him that there is lots of painting he could do to stay busy. If he gets the touch ups done, I'll be thrilled and that should still leave time for the projects of his heart. I have a feeling he'll sleep to noon on the weekends we're gone. Maybe I should stay home and he can go.

Yesterday at my doctor's appointment the doctor said that the baby's heartbeat sounded like a boy. I think I'll hang on to everything just in case there's an ultrasound error. We're planning on the female variety but I'm going to play it cautious until we find out for sure. Matthew will have a tizzy if it's not a girl. His heart is set.

Well, I better make a few more calls.

What We've Been Up To

I haven't posted anything for awhile so today I thought I would just spill the beans about what's happening around the house. Don't get too excited. By "spilling the beans" I'm not about to reveal any new family secrets and I already told you I was pregnant last time.

We've just been doing our thing. The Internal Fix It Man from a few posts ago was not able to fix the furnace. Bummer and a new furnace later we have heat. Last week it sounded like an aircraft was landing in the basement each time the furnace kicked on. The Furnace Repair Guy of the Century (Jim McConkey--just in case you need a really great reasonably priced repairman)told us the unit was fixable but was probably in the sunset of life. It was our decision to repair or replace. We stewed on it for a week leaning toward replace but hoping to maybe make it through winter. Wednesday night when I got up in the middle of the night I smelled a hot wire smell. I shut the furnace off and called in the morning to say we were ready to replace. So now we are the proud owners of a new furnace or "dryer" as Matthew keeps calling it. My dad was a furnace repairman when I was a kid and I have many fond memories of traveling with him on service calls. I got to hold the light. I probably should have voluteered my services to Jim yesterday but I was too busy trying to keep an 18 month old from stealing the light.

Speaking of my little cherub, he left the house last night about 8:30. I was panicked. I ran from room to room calling him and flipping on the lights only to arrive at the sickening feeling that he was gone. I was ready to call a neighborhood search when the doorbell rang. A man from clear down the street was standing with Spencer and ask if "this one was ours." I was so relieved to see him and felt so blessed that he was safe. Apparently he left out the front door but then shut it almost the whole way behind him so it didn't register with me that he went outside. It was dark and he had no shoes and no coat but luckily was still in our yard playing with stones in the flower bed. The neighbor walks at night and he said when he passed the house Spencer popped out from behind the fence. It was the end of a fun-filled day for him including spraying Grandma's cleaning chemicals on the walls, pulling dirt from a plant and breaking her antique dish. Bedtime was vey welcome.

I accompanied Matthew to his parent/child soccer class last night and it was reaffirmed why pregnant people should not play soccer. I loved the time I got to sit on the bench while the kids played "duck duck goose" in between drills. So glad I was not invited to play. Matthew is our little runner and he loves to kick the ball to the other end of the gym then chase it and slide into second no matter what drill he is to be doing. There really is only one drill in his mind and that is to blast the ball and then go get it. Control means nothing. At least not to him. I on the other hand was having issues with his style. Corbin said that part of the parents job was to also control the kids during the drills. I told him to have a nice time with him next week. I'm getting out of the business. The whole show is very cute to watch though and Matthew ask me if I was proud of him. Of course I was.

It's snowing today. Welcome spring. We'll need our snow suits for the neighborhood Easter egg hunt tomorrow.
